Wild damson trees in California

Would anyone know if I can find wild damson trees in California? I'm especially interested in any reports from Northern California or even up into the Sierra foothills. I'm keen to make some damson jam this season, but haven't had any luck spotting them so far. Any tips on identification or potential areas to check would be hugely appreciated! Of course, always with respect for land and regulations. Thanks in advance!

Well damson plums are quite common across Europe, and are a rare sight in California, or the entire US for that matter. You might be able to find wild plums, but I'm not sure about the taste. With that said, I'm not 100% which way to point you, but I am interested in that jam!

Yeah, damsons aren't commonly found in California because they thrive in cooler and wetter environments. You might come across some cultivated versions that have escaped cultivation near old homesteads in the Sierra foothills or along the coast. When searching, keep an eye out for small purple plums with a tart flavor and oval pits.
